WVYC is home to one of the most active racing programs in Western Canada. For over 20 years, the club has actively supported and developed youth sailing skills to talented individuals from basic White Sail to Canadian Sailing Team levels. Athletes from WVYC have often gone on to compete and perform well in national and world championship regattas.

What is the Youth Racing Team all about?
The WVYC Youth Sailing Team is focused on developing youth sailing skills as much as it is on individual life-skills for the sailors. These two skills go hand-in-hand. Competitive sailing is a unique sport that is refereed by the athletes, demands an extraordinary amount of mental stamina, requires a high degree of physical performance, requires efficient communication and coordination with team members, and stresses the importance of fine-tuning to achieve results. These abilities, in turn, develop sportsmanship, decision-making, good health and nutrition habits, teamwork, focus, and goal setting, respectively.
Of course, none of this is achieved without having fun both on and off the water. While practices and regattas aim to develop and test skills in an exciting environment, a lot of the fun is had through team events and traveling to regattas. Almost every sailing club hosts at least one regatta. The coach chooses the best ones to attend and many of these involve road trips with lakeside/oceanside camping or
billeting, evenings with buffets, socializing, dancing, or attempting another sport. Camaraderie’s are made both in the race team and among other youth sailors from other teams.
