A survey of members conducted in 2011 showed that current club members were very positive about a number of aspects of the Club. They were asked for the main reasons they joined the Club and how those expectations were being met. These included, in order of importance:
- Location of the Club – in Fisherman’s Cove
- Outstations – Centre Bay on Gambier Island, Kendrick Island in Gabriola Pass and Telegraph Harbour on Thetis Island - both in the southern Gulf Islands plus Pender Harbour on the Sunshine Coast on the way to Desolation Sound.
- Clubhouse Facilities
- Friendships
- Moorage
- Yacht racing
- Social Events
- The Club’s newsletter -the Foghorn, The Annual Yearbook and the club website also received positive reviews.
The club has an ongoing capital improvement plan based upon sound, time-tested financial projections; notable projects include:
- The Yachting Centre, our junior and senior learn-to–sail center and general use building (2003)
- 2003 saw the commencement of the ongoing dock replacement program at Fisherman’s Cove and at the club outstations, complete with progressive shore side maintenance programs
- Planned shore side clubhouse restoration in fall 2011, which follows the Galley and clubhouse office renovation of 2006.
- The dry wharf construction in 2006 that made space for 10 additional racing yachts
- Ongoing annual boat replacement program to ensure that all equipment meets the arduous demands and expectations of the Learn to sail programs
For racers the West Vancouver Yacht Club has an excellent set of programs. In the summer races are held on Wednesday nights and in the winter the Snowflake Series are held on Sundays. The series are inclusive of all levels of boats and race teams. The highlights of the racing season are the annual Easter classic, the Southern Straits Race and each fall the Pumpkin Regatta which attracts over 250 dinghy sailors; both races draw from the keen competitors of the Pacific North West.
The overall feel of the club is informal and friendly. Members know each other well and this is partially a result of working together on many volunteer activities and projects, large and small. Many members cruise together and get to know each other at the great outstation venues.
