The West Vancouver Yacht Club is fortunate to be located in the best sheltered harbour in the Lower Mainland, with immediate access to the wonderful cruising waters of Howe Sound and within a few hours cruise to the Gulf Islands and the upper part of the Strait of Georgia. There is a waiting list for moorage. However, non-moored members can make use of the club's docks temporarily while other boats are on extended voyages away from the club. But, like any good yacht club, there's a great deal more than just moorage:
* The Club has four excellent outstations at Kendrick Island, Elliott Bay, Pender Harbour and Telegraph Harbour.
* Members have access to the club's maintenance facilities, including a workshop, mast shed, crane, mast tower and an elevator to lift a member's vessel out of the water for bottom painting and other work.
* The Club's food and beverage facilities, which offer bar service, lunches, Sunday dinners, banquet and catering services, provide members with access to great food in a unique setting for up to 125 people and is the place to cater your wedding in West Vancouver. The clubhouse and the catering services are also available to members who wish to hold a private function such as a wedding, an anniversary or some other celebration. The Yachting Centre to the west of the main Clubhouse sits in a spectacular waterfront setting with vaulted ceiling and large outdoor patio make it an ideal building for a variety of activities that groups up to 40 may wish to undertake.
* A wide-variety of social functions are organized throughout the year including the annual Sailpast, the Commodore's Ball, opening weekends at Kendrick Island and Elliott Bay, as well as many other events such as Robbie Burns Night, Rhythm and Blues night, the Crab and Corn Fest and a choice of two, or both, Christmas Dinner/dances.
* The Club hosts regular seminars and workshops on the many technical aspects of owning and operating a yacht. We also promote boating safety, one part of which is an annual Canadian Coast Guard safety inspection at our docks.
* The Club's newsletter, the Foghorn, keeps members informed about activities throughout the year. The yearbook is published annually. It contains a register of our members and their vessels, the club's constitution and regulations and other useful information. See the website home page to sign up for the club weekly e-zine.
* The Club offers free spousal membership to the life partner of the primary member. In keeping with past tradition, both the primary and spousal member is entitled to a free Sunday night dinner in the month of their birthday.
* The Club is a leader in learn to sail programmes for both adults and juniors. These programs are open to all, members and non-members alike. The Club has an ongoing equipment replacement program to ensure that your children are in the safest and most up-to-date sailing dinghies. To this end , in 2011 the club added four new Flying Juniors dinghies to its instructional and racing fleet and will continue with four more in 2012.
* Racing is an important part of Club life. For new members there are a number of opportunities to get involved with racing in our summer Wednesday Evening Series, and our Snowflake series on Sundays during the winter season. Boats are often looking for crew and this is an excellent way to meet new people in the Club.
The Wednesday Evening Series also has a Cruising Division for races that are perhaps less competitive or have smaller crews.
*The signature race of the year is the Southern Straits Classic, held now for over 42 years, on Easter weekend. It attracts racers from all over the PNW and for many crews it is the first race of the season. Many Club members volunteer for this and other racing events which are detailed in the Racing section of the site.
* Not to be forgotten, the fall junior rendez-vous, The Pumpkin Bowl Regatta, attracts Junior sailors from the Pacific northwest with over 100 dinghies competing each year.
* The Club has been investing in renovating and refurbishing its assets and facilities. New members will see a continuing focus on this priority.
